Kotoka International Airport in Ghana likely to be renamed ‘Kwame Nkrumah International Airport’

Ghana’s Prime International Airport might be due for a timely name change.

Some Ghanaians have opined that Ghana’s Most Prominent international airport Kotoka international Airport does not deserve the name it carries. They suggest that Major General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka whom the international airport was named after does not deserve the accolade since he played no role in its conceptualization and construction. One of such persons is the Chairman of Ghana’s current ruling political party the NDC, Mr. Asiedu Nketia.

Asiedu Nketia asserted that the name ‘Kotoka International Airport’ has remain unchanged over the years because no government has been able to. However, if it were up to him, the name would be changed immediately.

In his opinion, Kwame Nkrumah who did the hard work deserves the recognition, not a coup plotter who did nothing to establish the airport for the country.

In his words “Kotoka carried out a coup, overthrew Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and named the airport after himself. That is not right. Kwame Nkrumah did all the work, and Kotoka came and took the glory after the coup. I believe we need to change that name.”

Several governments have come and gone, but none has had the courage to change the name of the airport. Maybe, just maybe this might be the right time during the tenure of Ghana’s current President, His Excellency President John Mahama.
