Have you heard of the second smallest country in Africa ? It is Sao Tome and Principe.
São Tomé and Príncipe is an island nation located in the Gulf of Guinea, off the western coast of central Africa. It’s situated approximately 300 kilometers (200 miles) off the coast of Gabon. The country consists of two main islands, São Tomé and Príncipe, along with several smaller islets.
In the beautiful land of Sao Tome and Principe, there is Pico Cao Grande, the tallest mountain on the second smallest country in Africa of Sao Time and Principe iswithout a doubt the most tourist iconic site in Sao Tome.

Pico Cao Grande is a solitary, mysterious lonely spire of a volcanic tower. A volcanic plug to be precise, created when the lava of another volcano formed hardened magma over the mouth of an active volcano. At 370 meters tall the needle-shaped rock majestically towers over the island and is frequently enveloped in a thick fog that waxes and wanes throughout the day. This structure is comprised of treacherously steep volcanic rock encrusted in slippery mosses grown easily in the wet conditions. Flanked by a thick jungle of giant ferns, which are infested with snakes act as a natural deterrent for exploration.
It seems only a handful of people have climbed Pico Grande due to its difficulty. Obviously, the steep shape of the volcanic rock, searing heat, rain, and humidity makes for a challenging climb. In addition, many snakes (black mambas I am told) live on the volcanic plug, making bushwhacking and climbing even more treacherous.

The Pico Cão Grande (Portuguese for “Great Dog Peak”) is a landmark needle-shaped volcanic plug peak in São Tomé and Príncipe, in the Caué District of São Tomé Island in Parque Natural Obô de São Tomé. Its summit is 663 metres (2,175 feet) above sea level, and it rises about 370 metres (1,210 feet) over the surrounding terrain. The volcanic plug was formed by magma solidifying in the event of an active volcano. The nearest village is Vila Clotilde, 3 km to the east. The district seat São João dos Angolares is 9 kilometres to the east.
The volcanic plug is quite a recent phenomenon, having formed as part of the Cameroon line of volcanoes roughly three and a half million years ago in the Pliocene. Its composition is mainly phonolite (also called clinkstone in vernacular English). The moss growing on the rocks due to high moisture content, and the presence of snakes, makes climbing here very difficult.
The first unsuccessful attempt to climb Pico Cão Grande was in 1975 by a Portuguese team while the first successful climb was completed by a Japanese group of climbers in 1991.
More recently a Spanish and a Mexican team both established new routes up the peak. One of the teams took 14-hour shifts of climbing every day for four weeks to set up the route. Oh my! Shortly thereafter an American team “free” climbed more of less the same routes. All of these climbers were men. Enter Sasha DiGuilain, a professional climber from the USA.
The route is both extremely long and technically very demanding, and their climb was plagued with difficulties, including snakebites and blown battery chargers. The most difficult portions of the climb are in the first 100 meters, after which the difficulty drops considerably.
In July 2018, the Spanish brothers Iker and Eneko Pou completed a multi-day team red-point ascent of a new route. They established the route ground up and without use of aid or removable bolts. They were also able to make the first all-free ascent of Nubivagant in team within two days. This was followed two weeks later by another all-free ascent by a team of Americans, Sam Daulton and Remy Franklin.
