Chadian Prime Minister Success Masra yesterday, May 22nd submitted his resignation after his defeat to junta Chief, Mahamat Idriss Deby just two weeks after the presidential elections.
Before becoming prime minister four months ago, Masra won 18.5% of the votes but contested the results. He eventually claimed victory in the ballot; a victory which his party called a ‘masquerade’ as international rights groups had said would not be fair or credible.
On his Facebook page, Masra said, “I’ve just submitted my resignation and that of the transition government, which became irrelevant with the end of the presidential election”.
Masra’s move is also in accordance with the Chadian constitution.
Mahamat Deby was proclaimed transitional president in April 2021 by a junta of 15 generals after his father, Ex-president Idriss Deby (who was in power for 30 years) was shot dead by rebels.
According to the final election results, Mahamat won the 61% of the total votes cast.
