By Festus Matey – Leader, Legal Green Association LGA (Ghana)
Legal Green Association (LGA), a left-wing association of Professional Law Students in Ghana has issued a press release per their stand on Galamsey in the Country.
They indicated this through the statement from their Leader Mr. Festus Matey on the Government’s invitation to civil society organizations (CSOs) engagement on illegal mining.
In their words “We forward our opinion on this national issue and propose some solutions. The Association is dedicated to promoting sustainable practices that protect Ghana’s natural resources and ensure a better future for generations to come. “
‘Galamsey’ refers to illegal small-scale gold mining, primarily in Ghana, a practice that has led to severe environmental destruction, including water pollution, deforestation, and soil degradation. The term is derived from the phrase “gather them and sell” and was historically used for traditional mining but now broadly encompasses illegal and artisanal small-scale mining activities.
In conclusion, “the Legal Green Association is dedicated to supporting sustainable mining in Ghana.” “Through the implementation of enforcement measures, collaboration with stakeholders, promotion of economic alternatives, and ensuring environmental justice, we are confident that Ghana can win this battle. The future of Ghana’s mineral wealth lies in the ability to balance economic needs with ecological stewardship. Sustainable mining practices are essential for the long-term success of Ghana’s mineral industry. Government, civil society, academia, and traditional authorities must therefore collaborate to make this transformation real and irreversible.”
