Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have set a new record for the most successive title wins. Manchester City is the first team to win four successive league titles in English football’s top tier.
The team recorded their unprecedented achievement on Sunday by beating West Ham 3-1 at the Etihad to win the title two points clear above Arsenal.
City have now won their sixth Premier League title in the past seven seasons. The team stands the chance of completing a double if they beat Manchester United in the FA Cup final on Saturday.
In the match against West Ham, Phil Foden fired City into the lead in the second minute and added his second soon after that. Mohammed Kudus’ overhead kick late in the first half gave the visitors some hope of a come back. However, Rodri’s low strike in the early parts of the second half was enough to secure the title for his side.
“Man City comes back week after week, month after month, season after season. From a sporting perspective, you can’t take anything away from them. They are at such a high level. Pep’s designed a style of football which has been revered around Europe. He’s a winning machine”, said Gary Neville.
Phil Foden, who was player of the match told Sky Sports: “Not just me, all the lads have played in important games, we’ve played this scenario over. We were confident. It’s paid off. It was the perfect start [scoring after two minutes]. This feeling will never get old. I want this winning feeling always.”
Kevin De Bruyne said that this is one of his “most special” titles after bouncing back from a difficult season with injury. “It feels as amazing as the first one. We worked so hard for it, it’s been a tough battle with Arsenal and Liverpool. Doing something historic is so special. To come back in the way that I could and to help the team and be at a good level is a good achievement for me personally.”
There were individual honours for FWA player of the year Foden and Golden Boot winner Erling Haaland but the Manchester City team are now turning their attentions to the FA Cup final against Manchester United on May 25.
