Ghanaian actress and entrepreneur Yvonne Nelson has voiced her concerns about the current state of Ghana’s educational system. In an interview with Joy News, Nelson recounted a troubling incident where she saw students using cutlasses to weed before attending classes.
Expressing her disbelief, Nelson highlighted the absurdity of such practices in today’s world. “We need to do better. I have a video on my phone. I was on my way to Kumasi once after I launched my book and saw kids walking to school with cutlasses. I stopped them and asked why, and they said they weed before going to class. How are they supposed to weed and then go to class? They’ll be tired, and mentally unprepared. How is this allowed in schools? What if someone gets angry and uses a cutlass to hurt a friend? Is this really happening in 2024? Does the Ministry of Education know about this? We have to do better,” she stressed.
Nelson, who has recently ventured into educational entrepreneurship, founded the “Just Like Mama daycare center” and the “Yvonne Nelson International School” for primary students. She revealed that her daughter inspired her to pursue this path.
“My daughter started school when she was one year and six months old. She would come home with bruises or insect bites, and the school wouldn’t inform me beforehand. That was a red flag. Academically, I wasn’t seeing much progress. As a parent, you should notice changes in vocabulary and behavior. I watch everything my daughter does, help her with reading, and use flashcards. I’m really into education, so I thought, this is something I can do well because I am passionate about it,” she explained.
Despite the challenges of balancing school management, acting, and producing, Nelson, who is also known for her book ‘I am Not Yvonne Nelson,’ believes her experience in production has prepared her for this demanding phase of her career.
