Former Zanzibar Minister Under Scrutiny During Alcohol Scarcity Inquiry

Tanzania’s ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), has raised concerns regarding the former Zanzibar tourism minister, Simai Mohamed Said, who stepped down recently amidst a scarcity of alcohol in the islands. Mr. Said appeared before the party’s ethics committee on Tuesday but refrained from disclosing the reason behind his summons.

After the meeting, Mr. Said informed journalists that visiting the party’s office was a routine, clarifying that he wasn’t authorized to speak on behalf of the meetings. He suggested reaching out to the committee’s chairperson or secretary-general for further information.

Mr. Said resigned from his post as tourism minister two weeks earlier, citing unfavorable and disruptive working conditions. His departure has been associated with the alcohol shortage crisis affecting the Tanzanian archipelago, posing a threat to the tourism sector of one of Africa’s premier travel destinations
